The best ever election result of Finnish Greens
The Green League of Finland got its best ever election result in the general
election on 16 March 2003. The Finnish Greens increased the number of seats
from 11 to 14 and their share of the vote to 8,0 % from 7,3 %.
The party gained the new seats in the regions of Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa and
North Carelia. MEP Heidi Hautala was elected to the parliament with the best
individual Green result and as the 9th most popular candidate in the whole
country. The Green group in the parliament now consists of three men and
eleven women. Four of the MPs are newcomers.
The opposition party, the Centre Party, won the elections as they got 7 new
seats and became the biggest party. This means that they will lead the
negotiations to build the new government. The Greens have expressed our
interest in participating in the government negotiations.
